Broncos baseball starts strong

  • Northgate High kicked off its baseball season with a 2-0 week, including a 3-1 victory over Las Lomas. Senior Spencer Johnson tossed a gem in the March 5 win over the Knights, allowing just two hits and one unearned run in a complete game effort. Kyle Graham led the offense, going 2 for 3 with a run and RBI. Northgate also beat American 5-2 on March 8.

    Minutemen surprise in NCS

  • Concord High became the Cinderella team of the North Coast Section boys basketball tournament, reaching the Division II finals and nearly stunning two-time defending champion Newark Memorial in the title game. The No. 4 seeded Minutemen led with just over a minute to go but fell 74-70 to the Cougars on March 8 at Saint Mary's College. Siaan Rojas scored 19 points and Spencer Clark added 18 for Concord. Concord is the No. 2 seed in the NorCal Division II regional playoffs and host the winner of Grant-Sacramento and Chico at 6 p.m. March 15.

    Wright medals at state

  • In his first trip to the CIF state championships, Alhambra High's Quentin Wright came home with a medal. The senior won his first bout by pin, but fell in the quarterfinals. He then won three matches in the consolation bracket to finish in 7th place in the 220-pound weight class. Wright was the only wrestler from Contra Costa County to earn a medal.

    Mats claim NCS title

  • The Miramonte High girls basketball team won its first North Coast Section title since 2008 with a resounding 94-42 win over Encinal in the Division III final on March 8. Breanna Alford had 21 points and nine rebounds as 11 different Matadors scored. Miramonte was selected for the CIF Northern California Open Division for the second straight year and travels to St. Mary's-Stockton for a March 14 first-round game.

  • Carondelet vs. Sacred Heart Cathedral-S.F., girls basketball, March 14, 7 p.m. -- The Cougars host the Irish, who hail from the Central Coast Section, in the first round of the CIF NorCal Open Division playoffs. The teams met on Dec. 27 with Carondelet winning 85-60.

  • Lynbrook-S.J. at Clayton Valley Charter, girls basketball, March 15, 6 p.m. -- The Eagles earned the No. 4 seed in the CIF NorCal Division II bracket and a first-round bye. They face the CCS D-II runner up Lynbrook in the quarterfinals.

  • Aragon/Vanden vs. Campolindo, boys basketball, March 15, 6 p.m. -- Do the Cougars have another NorCal run in them this year? Last season they reached the Division III finals. This year they have a first round bye and host either Aragon or Vanden in the quarterfinals.

  • College Park at Acalanes, baseball, March 15, 1 p.m. -- The Falcons, with a loaded junior class, visit the three-time defending NCS Division III champions for an enticing early-season nonleague game.

    Stars of the week

  • Anaya Alexander, Las Lomas girls track and field -- The sophomore won the 400 meters at the East Bay Invitational at California High with a time of 58.8 seconds on March 8.

  • Kyle Graham, Northgate baseball -- The senior was the offense star going 2 for 3 with run and RBI in a 3-1 win over Las Lomas on March 5, then turned in a solid performance on the mound in a 5-2 win over American on March 8. He allowed four hits and a run in six innings in earning the win.
