A Bay Point man being held on suspicion of attempted homicide had the complaint against him amended to murder Tuesday after his victim died of a gunshot wound.
Patrick Laughlin, 59, has been held at the County Jail in Martinez since the night of April 4, when sheriff's deputies responded to a call in the 100 block of North Broadway Avenue in Bay Point and found a 55-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to John Muir Medical Center where he died Monday.
According to police investigators, Laughlin and his victim knew each other. Contra Costa County DA Mary Knox said the motive for the shooting appears to have been a dispute over a drug deal.
Laughlin continues to be held in lieu of $1 million bail. He will be arraigned on the amended complaint Wednesday afternoon in Pittsburg Superior Court.
