There is no turning back now, because construction is underway and moving fast on the long-awaited Northgate High School Aquatics Complex and Sports Medicine Center.

On the drawing board since 1974, there was a groundbreaking ceremony for the $8.1 million complex last year. But now in an e-mail blast to supporters, Northgate Community Pride Foundation reports that phase one of the plan is on a fast track to be completed by June. The entire complex will open in the winter of 2014.

The center will include a 40-meter x 25 yard 16 lane pool with outdoor lighting, together with a dedicated sports medicine training facility and classroom.

The majority of the funding for the pool, $7.1 million, has been provided through Measure C funds and the remainder will be raised from the community through the foundation. So far the foundation has raised more than $600,000 but still needs more donations.
