Because Madeline loved purple

On May 6, Mayor Kristina Lawson opened the Walnut Creek City Council meeting in memory of 8-year-old Madeline Cashion, who died from a rare form of cancer on April 28. Madeline, daughter of longtime Walnut Creek Police officer Lt. Tom Cashion, was diagnosed in 2010. In her memory, the neighbors where the Cashions live in Walnut Creek decorated their homes and mailboxes with purple ribbons, in recognition of Madeline's favorite color. Here, Jack Fallin walks his two dogs, Jimmy and Bosco, past a mailbox and palm tree festooned with purple ribbons along Glen Court. Her memorial service was held May 6 and many city employees and all of the Walnut Creek Police Department attended. "Its been a tough day here in Walnut Creek," Lawson said. "Lt. Tom Cashion has spent many nights standing silently in the back of this room protecting and taking care of us and now it's our time for us to take care of him and his family."
