The Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau-sponsored "Leadership Contra Costa" has graduated more than 600 people in the last 26 years from a program designed to identify and prepare potential community leaders.
Participants attend presentations and workshops from community leaders about critical issues facing the community, including health and aging, the price of justice, business and the economy, environment, education, technology and the future, government and politics, and Contra Costa in the future.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers are ordinary people doing extraordinary work for abused, neglected and abandoned children and youth in foster care in our community.
As sworn officers of the court, CASA volunteers are appointed by a juvenile court judge to advocate one-on-one with a mutually selected foster child and become a caring, mature adult to be their voice, a mentor, and a trusting and consistent adult presence in their life.

The Lindsay Wildlife Museum is a natural history and environmental education center and the first wildlife rehabilitation hospital established in the United States, located at 1931 1st Ave. in Walnut Creek. The dedication of nearly 500 volunteers keeps things running smoothly, yet funding is crucial to ensure continued success.
Lindsay Wildlife Museum volunteers are issuing a "Volunteer Challenge" pledge to match funds up to $17,500 from new donors. Donations of any amount will increase total funds.
There are currently 1,000 animals in care at the rehabilitation hospital, with hundreds more admitted each week. The wildlife rehabilitation hospital treated 5,623 injured animals in 2013!

Red Cross 'Heroes'
The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter is seeking nominations for the Hero Awards, recognizing members of the community who have shown courage, dedication and character through acts of heroism and kindness.
Contra Costa County residents are encouraged to nominate a hero for one of the following categories who work or reside in the county, although the heroic acts may have occurred elsewhere. The heroic act must have occurred between Jan. 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014. The deadline to submit nominations is June 30.
Contra Costa community leaders will select award recipients who will be honored at the Contra Costa County Heroes Breakfast on Oct. 24, at Crow Canyon Country Club in Danville.

Onstage in Martinez
We are thrilled to see the Campbell Theater in Martinez come back to life.
Dick Hinds, manager of the Onstage Theatre Repertory, brought Martinez Rotary members up to date on their plans for the future of the Campbell Theater in Martinez at a recent meeting.
The Onstage play, "Shipwrecked! The Amazing Adventures of Louis De Rougemont" runs through June 1, at the theater, 636 Ward St., in Martinez.
Future plans include an improv competition among four high schools and a work-shopped musical written by a Martinez resident.
Hinds reminded his audience that high cost of putting on a production cannot be covered by ticket sales alone, and thanked them for their donation.

First 5 realty help
Fifty volunteers from Keller Williams Realty in Walnut Creek, led by team leader Ryan McCarty, helped transform an unused dirt lot into a vibrant learning garden for low-income preschoolers and their families at the Monument Community First 5 Center, 1736 Clayton Road in Concord.
The event was part of Keller Williams' annual RED Day campaign, a day of service for its associates to give back to important causes in their communities.
The Monument Community First 5 Center provides free parenting and enrichment classes for families with children up to age 5.
The "Garden of Good Things" will serve as an outdoor classroom offering new programs for children and parents focused on sensory art, science, nutrition and gardening.
Monument Community First 5 Center is managed by nonprofit, Aspiranet, and funded by First 5 Contra Costa, serving approximately 300 families annually. It provides free parenting classes and activities to help young children grow up healthy, nurtured and ready for kindergarten.
