WALNUT CREEK -- There have been years when voters have not seen a Walnut Creek school board race because the seats are often uncontested, or the number of candidates matches the number of open seats.

This year, things are different. With two incumbents choosing not to run for re-election, five people have filed to fill the three open four-year seats on the Walnut Creek School Board.

Below are the list of candidates who filed with the county election's office and their vocation:

  • Stacey Schweppe, Retail Merchandising/Planning

  • Barbara S. Pennington, incumbent who has been on the board since 2002

  • Heidi Hernandez Gatty, client services director

  • Aimee Moss, community volunteer

  • Sherri McGoff, school finance technician

Current board Clerk Angela Borchardt and board President Jon-Michael Johnson will leave the board once their terms expire in December. Borchardt has been on the school board since 2003, and this was Johnson's first term, elected back in 2010.
