In a bid to show that "you can teach an SPCA dog new tricks," the animal group has taught three dogs to drive a car.

The animal trainers behind the effort of the rescue group's New Zealand organization say teaching dogs to drive highlights the animals' intelligence, which they hope will encourage more adoptions.

Monty, Porter and Ginny learned to move a gear lever, sit in a driving position and hold a steering wheel in a modified Mini Countryman.

One skill that's still not up to scratch, though, is braking, says trainer Mark Vette. "We had a couple of days ago the car was going too fast, the trainer nearly got run over."
