Albany fire damages Thai restaurant
A fire early Tuesday morning badly damaged the Da Nang Krungthep Thai Cuisine restaurant, an Albany firefighter said.
The one-alarm blaze was reported around 3 a.m. at 905 San Pablo Ave. near Solano Avenue, fire Capt. John Weitzel said. Firefighters had the flames under control about a half-hour later, he added.
Nobody was reported injured.
Weitzel said investigators were continuing to look into the cause of the fire, including the possibility that a stove or oven had been left on in the kitchen.
Albany budget, capital improvement meeting
A public hearing to discuss the Albany operating budgets for fiscal 2012-13 and 2013-14, and capital improvement plan for 2013-18 will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 1000 San Pablo Ave.
Copies of budget and improvement plan documents are available at the city Finance Department during normal business hours.
Filing period opens for City Council candidates
Petitions to run for one of three El Cerrito City Council seats up for election in November will be available starting Monday at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.

Cleanup Event at BART station entrances
Volunteers are being sought to join El Cerrito's Green teams at a work day to clean the area around the city's two BART stations from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Albany police holding 'Safety Palooza'
The Albany Police Department is out to prove that safety and fun go hand-in-hand at its open house event from 1 to 4 p.m. on July 22.
The department's second annual Safety Palooza will have tours of the public safety facilities, a 25-foot-tall rock climbing wall, raffle prizes on the half-hour, remote control police cars, face painting, bean bag toss, observation skills challenge and other activities.
The free family event starts in the parking lot at City Hall, 1000 San Pablo Ave.
Magic and acrobatics fun at Albany Library
The Family Summer Program series at the Albany Library, 1247 Marin Ave., will have a double bill at 6:30 p.m. July 24, featuring Dan Chan the Magic Man and Kat the Acrobat.
The free show is in the Edith Stone Room at the library, 1247 Marin Ave. Space is limited with priority given to children.
Preparation meeting for National Night Out
El Cerrito wants to build on its award-winning National Night Out crime prevention event, scheduled this year for Aug. 7, and is holding an informational meeting for residents next week.
"Turning El Cerrito Night Out into Neighborhood Watch Success" will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.
The session will provide tips on hosting a Night Out block party, information on crime prevention programs from the El Cerrito police and assistance for streets that want to organize a Neighborhood Watch group.

Trail restoration work in El Cerrito
A work party to reestablish a trail in the El Cerrito area known as Motorcycle Hill will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 22.
Volunteers are welcome to join El Cerrito Trail Trekkers in removing invasive Scotch broom and restoring footing on rough portions using mattocks and shovels.
"The result will be an improved trail that will make it easier for the public to enjoy this magnificent open space with views of the Bay," the group states.
The area was widely popular in the decades before World War II for the uphill motorcycle races that were held there.
