DANVILLE -- Solar panels on the roof of the Veterans Memorial Building went online Monday after Pacific Gas & Electric installed a Net Energy Meter at the facility.
The new meter allows electricity from the solar panels to be fed back into the energy grid, reducing the town's electrical consumption, Town of Danville Senior Civil Engineer Michael Stella said.
The panels were part of an $8.1 million renovation of the Veterans Memorial Building located downtown at 400 Hartz Ave. The building reopened in April but the panels could not be used until the meter was installed.
The energy from the panels doesn't completely offset the building's energy needs, but it helps reduce the town's use of fossil fuels, Stella said.
The town is also in the process of working on a larger scale photovoltaic project which would involve setting up solar arrays at four locations around town.
