The Richmond High boys soccer team was expected to run through the Tri-County Athletic League's Rock Division, but after some up and down results early this season, that wasn't exactly happening.

So Wednesday's league clash with El Cerrito was very important to the Oilers, and they played like it with a 3-0 home win over the Gauchos.

"We've tied against some teams that we should have beat because we're a talented team," Richmond captain Erik Montes said. "We played pretty well today, but we could have played better."

Montes had a hand in all three goals for Richmond (4-2-4, 2-0-2 TCAL) as he assisted on the two first half goals, then scored in the 75th minute. He split the El Cerrito (2-8-0, 1-2-0) defense, got one on one with the keeper and put the ball away in the bottom left corner.

The Oilers jumped on the Gauchos right away, scoring in the fifth minute on a Juan Rivera goal. Jorge Alvarez made the score 2-0 with a goal in the 29th minute.

Richmond threatened to score more goals on several different occasions, but Erik Gonzales had six saves, several of them very good, to keep El Cerrito in the game.
