A benefit at the El Cerrito High School Performing Arts Center, 540 Ashbury Ave., at 7:15 and 8:30 p.m. on March 29 will feature the Student Academy Award-winning short film "Nani," by 2003 ECHS alumnus Justin Tipping.
Tipping, who did his film and media studies at UC Santa Barbara, earned his master's degree in directing from the American Film Institute in 2012.
"Nani," a 21-minute film completed in 2011 as Tipping's student thesis film, had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2012 and went on to screen internationally at more than 40 film festivals. The work, described as "the bold and emotional story of a teenage graffiti artist and an aging woman struggling with dementia," was directed and co-written by Tipping and filmed locally with help from family and friends. The film earned the Student Oscar last year, and Tipping was awarded a Directors Guild of America Student Film Award.
A question-and-answer session with the director will follow each showing.
Advance tickets, $10 general and $5 students, can be reserved by sending an email to email@example.com or calling 510-812-5411. Proceeds benefit the scholarship fund of the El Cerrito High School Archiving Project, which is hosting the event.
