EL SOBRANTE -- Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Center of San Francisco Bay Area will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Sunday with federal and local dignitaries to mark the temple's upcoming expansion.

Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez, Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia, of Richmond, and county Community Development Deputy Director Aruna Bhat are expected to attend, as will guests from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, according to Ravinder Randhawa, an official of the El Sobrante Gurdwara.

The Golden Temple is Sikhism's holiest shrine.

In October 2009, the county Board of Supervisors approved the Sikh Center expansion project, which will include a community center, museum and performing arts center, Bhat said; the Sikh Center also will repair a small landslide on the southern end of its property.

Sunday's groundbreaking will be at 2 p.m.
