OAKLAND -- Therese Barquet knows the challenges single mothers face trying to keep their children safe from the dangers of the streets.

Barquet, a single mother who volunteers and mentors both at juvenile hall in Martinez and at the Richmond Police Activities League, also sees the consequences young people without sufficient guidance face.

Barquet will be the guest speaker and moderator at a public forum themed "Why My Son?" from 1 to 3 p.m. April 27 in the community room at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 959 12th St. in Oakland.

Community leaders and area nonprofit groups have been invited to participate in the discussion and share resources at the forum.

Barquet, the founder of the organizations Mothers of Labeled Youth and Everyone Deserves a Chance, "will share her true story about the trials, tribulations, and the triumphant recovery of her son from the streets."

She is a judicial assistant at the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco and serves on the Richmond Police Commission.

Light refreshments will be served.
