El Cerrito police log: Burglars strike while residents are away

FRIDAY, MAY 24 STOLEN AUTO -- An El Cerrito woman, 55, was arrested for driving a stolen Infiniti near Carlson Boulevard and San Pablo Avenue. THEFT FROM AUTO -- Someone removed a garage door opener from an unlocked vehicle in the 2600 block of Arlington Boulevard. A catalytic converter was stolen out of a Toyota Sequoia near Knott and San Pablo avenues. Between 5:40 p.m. and 6:10 p.m., two vehicles were burglarized at 6060 Central Avenue, one by breaking the driver's side window to take a backpack and one by breaking the rear passenger window to steal a piece of luggage. Both items were later located in El Cerrito Plaza. Items were also stolen around the same time from two vehicles at 8000 El Cerrito Plaza. In both incidents, windows were broken and backpacks were stolen. THEFT FROM RESIDENCE -- A home in the 800 block of Elm Street was entered through an open rear bedroom window and several laptops were stolen. Undisclosed items were stolen from a home in the 700 block of Pomona Avenue after the culprit entered through an open bedroom window.
SATURDAY, MAY 25 DUI -- Police arrested an El Cerrito man, 43, for driving under the influence of alcohol and evading an officer after police tried to pull over his vehicle that was minus a front tire near Cutting Boulevard and San Pablo Avenue. A San Pablo man, 28, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license, following a traffic enforcement stop near Moeser Lane and San Pablo Avenue. POSSESSION -- At 12:24 p.m., police arrested a Richmond woman, 42, for suspected possession of methamphetamine and a Richmond woman, 23, for two arrest warrants after a witness saw them making a drug transaction near Orchard and San Pablo avenues. THEFT -- At 5:30 p.m., police arrested an intoxicated Richmond man, 51, for trespassing and eating food without paying at Safeway, 11450 San Pablo Ave. Management had banned him earlier in the week. THEFT FROM RESIDENCE -- A home was entered through an unlocked basement door to steal an undisclosed amount of personal property in the 600 block of Albemarle Avenue.
SUNDAY, MAY 26 PROWLING -- A resident of a home in the 1100 block of Arlington Boulevard reported that a male juvenile had come up onto the front porch and shook the door handle. The teen then fled the scene. THEFT -- In separate incidents, police arrested two people for suspected shoplifting at Safeway: An Oakland man, 46, and a San Francisco woman, 42, who had prior convictions and was observed stealing approximately $200 worth of items.
MONDAY, MAY 27 ABUSE -- Police arrested an El Cerrito man, 49, for battery and elder abuse after he reportedly choked his elderly mother during an argument. INTOXICATION -- A heavily intoxicated panhandler, 53, from Vallejo was taken to jail after police received a complaint about his aggressive behavior in front of Starbucks in the 11800 block of San Pablo Avenue.
TUESDAY, MAY 28 POSSESSION -- Police arrested a Richmond man, 46, during a pedestrian stop in the 11500 block of San Pablo Avenue after finding him in possession of a suspected crack cocaine pipe and an outstanding warrant. He was also cited for providing a false name to the officer. THEFT FROM RESIDENCE -- Someone removed window screens and tampered with a window at a home in the 1000 block of Brewster Drive. The resident had come home to find two people loitering in front of the home. The pair got into a vehicle when the homeowner tried to follow them. The victim then saw another person running away from his house.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 29 ATTEMPTED THEFT -- At 12 p.m., three people were seen trying to steal more than $500 worth of groceries from Lucky Supermarket, 1000 El Cerrito Plaza. The trio fled the store when they gleaned that store security was watching them and drove off in a gray Honda Civic. STOLEN AUTO -- A 1989 Honda Civic was stolen from the 7200 block of Waldo Avenue.
