SAN FRANCISCO -- A boater who led the Coast Guard on a slow-speed chase in San Francisco Bay has been charged by federal prosecutors.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1dTXa3Q ) David McCormick was charged Tuesday with communicating false distress, failure to "heave to" and assault on a federal officer.
Court papers said McCormick broadcasted a fake SOS call Sunday from a sailboat moored off Sausalito, saying his "best mate" had fallen overboard.
When Coast Guard crews located his boat and requested to come aboard to investigate, McCormick warned them that any attempt to board would be an "act of war."
Prosecutors alleged McCormick led authorities on a 6-hour chase before he was stopped off Ocean Beach. When an officer tried to handcuff him, McCormick hit the officer three times in the face.
