El Cerrito police log: Squatters occupy home; youths instigate incident at Nation's

FRIDAY, JULY 12 DRUGS -- At 3:02 p.m., a Newark woman, 18, was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance near San Pablo and Stockton avenues. DUI -- Police arrested a Richmond man, 41, for driving under the influence of alcohol after a traffic enforcement stop at Central and Yolo avenues. ROBBERY -- A Berkeley man, 22, was arrested on Kearney Street for robbery after a purse-snatching incident that occurred near Donal Avenue and Elm Street. The suspect helped police recover the purse THEFT -- At 2:39 p.m., a Richmond man, 53, with prior convictions was arrested for theft after he was seen stealing food from CVS Pharmacy, 10650 San Pablo Ave. UNLAWFUL OCCUPATION -- At 9 a.m., police checked on a vacant house in the 6500 block of Barrett Avenue and found seven squatters illegally living there. They were evicted from the premises. During the investigation, a Richmond man, 35, was arrested for possession of stolen property and a San Francisco woman, 36, was arrested for an outstanding warrant. The city's code enforcement officer determined the home was not safe for occupation and all locks have been changed.
SATURDAY, JULY 13 COMMERCIAL CRIME -- At 7:30 p.m., someone stole 11 display phones and iPads from the Verizon Wireless store, 410 El Cerrito Plaza, and fled on foot. DUI -- A Suisun City man, 36, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a traffic enforcement stop at approximately 3:05 a.m. at El Dorado Street and San Pablo Avenue. POSSESSION -- Police arrested a Richmond male cyclist, 39, for possession of methamphetamine after stopping him at 10:39 a.m. at San Pablo Avenue and Schmidt Lane. RECOVERED AUTO -- At 7:17 a.m. at 10560 San Pablo Ave., police recovered an unoccupied Nissan Murano that had been reported stolen out of Martinez.
SUNDAY, JULY 14 HATE CRIME -- Just after 5:39 a.m., two young men from Albany, 18 and 19, were arrested after they had approached a group of juveniles at Nation's, 6060 Central Ave., and started verbally lambasting them with racially motivated epithets. They then left the eatery and were confronted by the victims outside the store. The victims took their personal property and assaulted one of the suspects. POSSESSION -- A Richmond male cyclist, 47, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine after police stopped him at Central and San Pablo avenues. THEFT -- Police cited an Emeryville man, 39, after he reportedly stole items from Safeway, 11450 San Pablo Ave. An Oakland woman, 61, was cited for theft after she reportedly ate a meal at Denny's, 11344 San Pablo Ave., and then was unable to pay.
MONDAY, JULY 15 ROBBERY -- Someone approached a man talking on his cell phone in a business parking lot in the 11800 block of San Pablo Avenue, and grabbed the device from the victim's hand. A brief struggle ensued and the suspect fled with the phone. THEFT FROM RESIDENCE -- Someone reported a burglary had occurred over the past three days in the 500 block of Clayton Avenue. The culprit had entered the home through an unlocked window and stole an undisclosed amount of personal property.
TUESDAY, JULY 16 STOLEN AUTO -- A 1997 Honda Accord was stolen in the 900 block of Everett Street. THEFT FROM AUTO -- Someone smashed the rear window of a vehicle in the Macaroni Grill lot at El Cerrito Plaza, and stole undisclosed personal items.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 17 COMMERCIAL CRIME -- A male juvenile, 16, was sent to juvenile hall for burglary, conspiracy, possession of a butterfly knife and an outstanding warrant after he was confronted for shoplifting by store security at a business in the 10600 block of San Pablo Avenue. The young suspect kicked the employee and fled to a waiting Lexus. Detectives caught up with the car several blocks away and found stolen property taken from another El Cerrito business and the knife. The driver, an Oakland woman, 19, was arrested for burglary and conspiracy and was taken to the Martinez Detention Facility.
THURSDAY, JULY 18 THEFT FROM AUTO -- Someone entered an unlocked vehicle in the 2400 block of Mira Vista Drive and stole undisclosed personal property. UNLAWFUL ITEMS -- A Berkeley male felon, 44, was arrested for illegal possession of pepper spray and suspected burglary tools after he was seen tampering with a vehicle in the 10600 block of San Pablo Avenue. Police located him several blocks away.
