RICHMOND -- Caltrans on Wednesday opened two lanes of westbound Interstate 580 to vehicles, moving traffic to the new bridge decks over Scofield Avenue and Western Drive. The agency says the contractor will continue paving Wednesday night and plans to open a third lane by 6 a.m. Thursday. If work is not complete by then, the third westbound lane will open on Friday morning.
On Wednesday night, one westbound lane will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for construction.
"In general, motorists can expect nighttime lane closures in the westbound direction from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and in the eastbound direction from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., as the contractor works on various construction activities," the agency said in an announcement. "One lane in each direction will remain open at all times. In addition, the bicycle shuttle will remain in operation from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m."
Caltrans said it expects to open the eastbound Western Drive onramp by mid-September and that the bike path detour for smaller vehicles will remain open from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. until the opening.
Contractors will now start work on the eastbound Scofield Avenue bridge deck. A 45 mph speed zone will be in effect and motorists are reminded to drive cautiously and leave a safe traveling distance behind other vehicles through the construction zone.
