RICHMOND -- The reopening of the popular Nibs Restaurant on San Pablo Avenue is on hold until the building's owners get a permit to bring the restaurant up to current building codes.
Nibs, located on the border between Richmond and El Cerrito, has been a special favorite of many residents for decades. It closed after a kitchen fire in February.
John and Anna Gerletti, of Richmond, own the building, while another couple, Alex and Hannah Yook, own the business, equipment and fixtures, John Gerletti said.
One barrier to moving ahead may be confusion around the building permit application.
Chad Smith, the contractor on the project, said he hasn't heard back on permit applications filed with the Richmond health and building departments.
However, Richmond building inspector supervisor Chris Castanchoa said his records show the department sent a letter June 10 to the Gerlettis seeking more information for the building permit but hasn't received a reply.
John Gerletti said he hasn't received such a letter.
"The problem is that we had to do some upgrades in the building, that was built in '70s, and needs to come up to code," Gerletti said.
