MARTINEZ -- A 21-year-old Richmond gang member was sentenced to 20 years in state prison Friday for fatally shooting a 16-year-old North Richmond boy in 2010.

Antonio Sanders died in his mother's arms after he was gunned down by Jewel Bonzette Bennett and Emani Stephens at Fourth Street and Grove Avenue in North Richmond on Jan. 14, 2010, prosecutor Melissa Smith said.

Stephens, 18, was killed in another drive-by shooting, this time in Richmond, seven months later. Bennett pleaded no contest Friday to "conspiracy to shoot from a vehicle at a human being" in connection with Sanders' death.

Several members of Sanders' family spoke at Friday's sentencing, Smith said.

"I think his mother said it best that this is a classic case where no one wins," Smith said. "They reiterated that they hope the violence in North Richmond stops because families are affected."
