The citywide garage sale, now an annual staple in many localities, originated in El Cerrito after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake as a way to clear residential garages in the interest of safety.

The original El Cerrito event was expanded in 2009 to spring and fall sales, and the next is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12, when 50 households will be participating.

The purpose of the event has changed since its origin. "The primary goal of the citywide garage sale now is to promote reuse, an important part of waste reduction and the 3 Rs -- Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle," is how the city puts it.

Along with finding bargains and putting "pre-owned" goods back into use, the day is also a way of raising cash, which is why speech and debate team parents from El Cerrito High are pooling resources to hold a garage and bake sale starting at 8 a.m. at 1022 Liberty St.

The offerings will include furniture, collectibles, vintage items, household goods, art, books, sporting equipment, kids items and a "lavish bake sale," with all proceeds going to the debate program, which is entirely self-supporting.

Maps of participating locations are available for download at www.el-cerrito.org/garagesale and printed versions can be picked up at the Recycling and Environmental Resource Center, 7501 Schmidt Lane, and the Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane.
