El Cerrito police log: Police urge vigilance, precautions during rise in early evening burglaries

Wednesday Sept. 23 DUI -- During a traffic stop at 2:35 a.m. near San Pablo and Barrett avenues officers arrested a 29-year-old Richmond woman for driving under the influence of alcohol. STOLEN VEHICLE -- A 2012 Toyota Rav4 was stolen between midnight and 4 a.m. in the 900 block of Kearney Street. A key to the vehicle was stolen a week earlier during a burglary at a nearby residence. The victim had been using a steering wheel lock after the burglary, but forgot to put it on that night. WARRANT ARREST -- A 55 year-old Richmond woman was arrested on an outstanding Contra Costa County warrant during a pedestrian stop at San Pablo Avenue and Moeser Lane. ROBBERY -- It was reported that eight days earlier a woman got off a bus at 9 p.m. in the 11700 block of San Pablo Avenue when two females asked for spare change. The victim was getting some change when she was grabbed and punched in the face by one of the pair. They fled with money, a cellular phone and BART ticket. SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCE -- At 4:15 p.m., a group of girls standing in front of Tehiyah Day School were approached by a man driving an older white van with red graffiti lettering on the side. The man said something indistinct to the girls, who immediately reported the encounter to the school administration. Police are investigating and are providing extra patrols around the school.
Thursday, Sept. 24 STOLEN VEHICLE -- A 1989 Nissan Pathfinder was stolen between 6:55 a.m. and noon on 6600 block of Schmidt Lane. BATTERY -- Two female juveniles from Richmond were detained by school resource officers for fighting during their physical education class at El Cerrito High. BURGLARY -- Between 6:55 a.m. and noon a residence in the 6400 Conlon Avenues was entered by breaking out a window and two televisions were stolen. VEHICLE THEFT -- A 1991 Nissan Maxima was stolen overnight near Wall and San Pablo avenues. VEHICLE THEFT -- A 1993 Honda Civic was taken from the 1000 block of Liberty Street overnight. COLLISION -- At 6:18 p.m., officers responded to a vehicle-pedestrian injury collision at Fairmount and Ashbury avenues, assisting a 37-year-old El Cerrito woman who had been struck by a vehicle while she was in the marked crosswalk. The driver, a 44-year-old El Cerrito woman, told officers she did not see the pedestrian until it was too late. The pedestrian declined medical treatment at the scene. BURGLARY -- A 53-year-old resident in the 5300 block of Rosalind Avenue reported that while she was watching TV in her living room between 10 and 11 p.m. with a rear sliding glass door open someone stole jewelry boxes, her wallet and cash. BURGLARY -- Between 6 a.m. and midnight a home in the 2000 block of Carquinez Avenue was entered through an unlocked back door and a large amount of jewelry, two laptop computers and an iPad were stolen. ARMED ROBBERY -- A 20-year-old Oakland man was identified and arrested for an earlier armed robbery in the parking lot of Bossa Nova Brasil, 10468 San Pablo Ave. He was identified using video surveillance images and physical evidence left at the scene. Police are trying to identify others involved.
Friday, Sept. 25 DRUNK IN PUBLIC -- At 1:50 a.m. a woman was reported screaming at Kearney Street and Stockton Avenue. The 29-year-old Oakland woman who was extremely intoxicated and was screaming because friends did not want her to drive, police said. She was arrested and booked in Martinez. BATTERY -- A 49-year-old Richmond man was arrested at 10589 San Pablo Avenue for trying to fight with a pregnant woman. The woman was able to avoid being injured. STOLEN VEHICLE -- During a theft investigation at Safeway, officers arrested a 31-year-old man from Clayton on an outstanding warrant and being in possession of a stolen Ford Focus.
Saturday Sept. 26 VEHICLE THEFT -- A 1991 Nissan Maxima was stolen overnight in the 11700 block of San Pablo Ave. VEHICLE THEFT -- A 1993 Honda Civic was stolen overnight in the 1000 block of Liberty Street. THEFT -- A 46-year-old Oakland man was arrested at Safeway for theft of wine worth $240. THEFT -- A 14-year-old Albany girl was arrested for stealing bottles of alcohol from Lucky at El Cerrito Plaza. MISSING JUVENILE -- A 16-year-old Richmond juvenile attending El Cerrito High School had been missing for two days, his mother reported. BURGLARY -- Jewelry and two computers were stolen from a residence in the 5400 block of Poinsett after a back bedroom window was forced open.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 27 SHOPLIFTING ARREST -- A shoplifting suspect was reported fleeing from Safeway in a vehicle just after noon. A witness identified the driver, a 51-year-old Richmond woman, and she was cited. BURGLARY -- A residence in the 10000 block of San Pablo Avenue was entered through an unlocked door and electronics were stolen. PROWLER -- At 10 p.m. hours, a resident in the 1200 block of Lawrence Street was awakened by strange noises outside and found a man with a flashlight looking through her window. He fled when she screamed. Police say it is the third prowling incident this month. BURGLARY -- Electronics and jewelry were stolen in the evening from a home in the 700 block of Everett Street. Police have noted a recent trend of early evening burglaries, rather than during daytime, and ask residents to report anything suspicious.
Monday, Sept. 28 STOLEN VEHICLE -- A tan 1997 Nissan Maxima was stolen from the parking lot of 10944 San Pablo Ave. STOLEN VEHICLE -- A silver 1997 Honda Civic was stolen overnight from the 5600 block of El Dorado Street. THEFT -- A 44-year-old San Francisco man arrested for stealing merchandise from CVS at El Cerrito Plaza had several prior theft convictions and a probation violation warrant and a parole violation warrant. RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY -- A brick was used to break a rear garage window and enter a house to steal a laptop and two video game systems 1400 block of Elm Street.
Tuesday, Sept. 29 BATTERY -- A fight was reported in the 2500 block of Nason Street when an argument between uncle and nephew turned physical. Both parties declined to seek prosecution and medical treatment. STOLEN VEHICLE -- A black 1998 Nissan Maxima was stolen from the 6600 block of Schmidt Lane.
Wednesday, Sept. 30 WARRANT ARREST -- A 30-year-old homeless man found sleeping in the bushes at Baxter Creek by Key Boulevard was found wanted in Sonoma County and arrested. AUTO BURGLARY -- A rear window of a vehicle at Nations, 6060 Central Ave., was broken and backpacks were stolen. THEFT -- A radio and 15 CDs were stolen from a vehicle in the 3200 Block of Santa Clara Avenue. STOLEN VEHICLE -- A black 1997 Honda Civic was stolen from Lincoln Avenue at Liberty Street. VEHICLE RECOVERY -- A Honda Accord reported stolen in Berkeley was found in the 500 block of Liberty Street. WARRANT ARREST -- At 3:37 a.m. officers followed a suspicious vehicle from San Pablo Avenue and Conlon Avenue to Key Boulevard and Humboldt Avenue, where the driver turned off the headlights and continued. The car was located near Key Boulevard and Nevin Avenue and the driver, a 33-year-old San Pablo man, had a warrant. Officers found a crow bar, a large file and knit gloves in the car.
