PINOLE -- The family of the late Joseph Mariotti invites the public to a memorial service Nov. 2 to share memories of the doctor, environmentalist, conservationist, human rights advocate and former Pinole City Council member who died Oct. 5 at the age of 82.

Dr. Joe, as he was popularly known, was an orthopedic surgeon for 30 years, at Brookside Hospital in San Pablo and in Pinole. He also was the team physician for the Pinole Valley High School Spartans football team for more than 30 years and was founder or member of numerous civic organizations.

Mariotti, who served on the City Council from 1984-88, was the husband of former Councilwoman and Mayor Gretchen Mariotti, who died in 2000.

Mariotti is survived by sons Paul Mariotti of Pinole and Eric Mariotti of Martinez; daughters Cari Jo Galloway of Pinole and Melinda Mariotti of London; and six grandchildren: Davis Mariotti, Maxton Mariotti, Aidan Mariotti, Rachel Galloway, Rebecca Galloway and Brett Galloway.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Pinole Historical Society, P.O. Box 285, Pinole CA 94564, or the Pinole Garden Club, P.O. Box 25, Pinole CA 94564-0025.

The memorial will be at 1 p.m. in the front yard of Mariotti's home, the historic Bernardo Fernandez mansion, 100 Tennent Ave. at Railroad Avenue.
