RICHMOND -- A man who police said tried to flee a small collision Tuesday afternoon died after his car flipped on the Richmond Parkway near Hilltop Mall.
The wreck happened about noon and shut down Richmond Parkway in the westbound direction between Blume Drive and San Pablo Avenue, Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said. The normally busy stretch of road was expected to remain closed for most of the afternoon, she said.
The 33-year-old man was driving a car that had been involved in a small wreck at the Richmond Parkway exit off westbound I-80, Abetkov said. The California Highway Patrol was investigating that crash, and Abetkov had no information other than to say that wreck was "minor" with nobody injured.
According to Abetkov, when police arrived to investigate the wreck near the exit, the man took off down the Richmond Parkway and never slowed down. As he approached the Bella Vista Apartment complex, at 3400 Richmond Parkway near Blume Drive, the car flipped.
Police have not determined why the man fled, Abetkov said.
