HERCULES -- The City Council on Tuesday agreed in closed session to accept the resignation of City Manager Steve Duran effective Jan. 6, and set about trying to find his replacement, City Attorney Patrick Tang announced.
On Monday, Antioch announced it had hired Duran as city manager to replace the retiring Jim Jakel.
In a letter of resignation to the Hercules council dated Monday, Duran had asked that Jan. 6 be his final working day in Hercules.
The council instructed Tang to check whether recruiter Avery and Associates, which came up with Duran in 2011, might do an expedited recruitment for less than its usual fee. The council also discussed the possibility of having the city do the recruitment itself. In the meantime, staff was instructed to look into possible interim city manager candidates. Further discussion of the matter was continued to the closed session of the Dec. 10 council meeting, Tang said.
The vote to accept Duran's resignation was 3-2. Bill Kelly, Dan Romero and Mayor John Delgado voted yes; Myrna de Vera and Sherry McCoy voted no.
