PINOLE -- The city finds itself looking for an interim fire chief after the previous one had to quit because he reached the maximum number of hours of service during a fiscal year under state Public Employees Retirement System rules.

Carlos Rodriguez, who retired as fire chief of Union City, had served as Pinole's interim chief on a contract basis since June.

Rodriguez left the post during Christmas week, having reached the 960-hour maximum for retired annuitants during fiscal year 2013-14.

Pinole had asked PERS for a waiver of the rule but was denied, said City Manager Belinda Espinosa.

She said she hopes to have a new interim chief on board soon.

For the longer term, Pinole is looking for a permanent, full-time fire chief. The deadline for applying is March 2.
