EL CERRITO -- Police issued a warning about two sightings in two days of a bobcat reported in the city's hills.
The most recent report came at 5:20 p.m. Feb. 11, when officers responded to a sighting in the 1400 block of Vista Road, behind Mira Vista Country Club off Rifle Range Road.
"The bobcat was seen for a brief time as it traveled from the backyard of a residence on Vista Road towards Club View Drive," according to the police department announcement.
Another evening sighting was reported a day earlier in the 1200 block of Contra Costa Drive.
Bobcats could be passing through in search of food or water, or could be seeking shelter or a space to use as a den.
"What to do if you encounter a bobcat? Scare off with loud noises or spray with a garden hose," the department advises. "If the animal is confined, open a gate, have all people leave the area, and allow it to leave on its own. Check for kittens in the area, and if kittens are there, then consider tolerating them for a few weeks until the kittens are large enough to leave the area with their mother."
Sightings should be reported to the El Cerrito Police Department by calling 911 or 510-233-1214.
