EL CERRITO -- A workshop to gather community input on possible smoke protection laws. will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 27 at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.
Possible regulations governing smoking and secondhand smoke are being considered under a goal in the city's 2013-18 Strategic Plan ensuring the public's health and safety.
In the American Lung Association's annual State of Tobacco Control 2014 report, released in January, El Cerrito was listed among 330 municipalities in California (61 percent) to receive an F for its Overall Tobacco Control grade.
The city is also collecting feedback with an online survey at www.el-cerrito.org/smoking.
"The City is not just considering this issue simply because we received a failing grade from the ALA," said Assistant City Manager Karen Pinkos. "Through the strategic plan developed in partnership with the community, the City Council was clear in its direction that they wanted to consider adopting some form of regulation for protection from smoking. However, the criteria set forth in the ALA's report provide a good set of measures for the city to consider as it moves forward with determining the level of regulation the council should enact."
