RICHMOND -- A special program Saturday featuring a still-working 94-year-old riveter kicks off Women's History Month events at the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front Historical Park Visitor Education Center, 1414 Harbour Way South.

The event is from 1 to 3 p.m., and admission is free.

The park's special guest is Elinor Otto, who worked on an aircraft assembly line starting in 1942 and is still riveting as a full-time worker at the Boeing plant in Long Beach.

Otto is also a spokeswoman for Spirit of '45 Day (www.Spiritof45.org), an observance established by a unanimous vote of Congress in 2010 to honor the men and women of the World War II generation.

She will be welcomed by park ranger and community ambassador Betty Reid Soskin, who also worked on the home front during the war and is now a popular speaker and the most vintage active ranger in the National Park Service at age 92. The pair will announce the kickoff of National Women's History Month events being held at the park in March.

The kickoff will also be marked by an appearance of the "Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive! Express," a display that is touring the United States to promote public interest in the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II next year.

"It is important to remind America of the role women played during World War II and how their experience led to greater participation by women in the economic and political life of the nation," Otto said in a news release. "It is especially important that young women learn about the achievements of those of us who served in uniform and on the Home Front so that our legacy continues to inspire future generations."

Upcoming Women's History Month events at the park include a screening of the 1980 documentary "The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter" at noon and 3 p.m. March 8 at the visitors center. The second showing will be introduced by the film's director, Connie Field, and editor, Lucy Phenix.

An illustrated talk on the propaganda campaign "Women, Get a War Job" will be presented by ranger Raphael Allen at 2 p.m. March 2, 9, 23 and 30 at the center.
